The largest scale remote controlled toys, Nitro RC cars are usually faster than electric RC cars, generate realistic sounds, and do not require long recharge times. They also need more maintenance than their electric counterparts do. This includes maintaining the engine and body as well as cleaning the vehicle. Proper care and maintenance will optimize performance and the enhance longevity of the gas RC car.
Drain the Fuel Tank
Before putting the vehicle away, burn all the fuel out of the tank by running the engine until it dies. This prevents condensation from accumulating inside the fuel tank. The alcohol-based Nitro fuel is susceptible to mixing with moisture, which can damage the engine. Owners should flush the fuel system at least once every three months. Check for cracks and debris in the fuel lines.
Engine Maintenance
After using the RC car, clean and oil the air filter to remove dirt and other debris trapped in the filter. Remove the filter and disassemble it. Wash the filter parts in soapy water and then rinse and let the parts dry. Add filter oil to the foam filter prior to reassembling and reinstalling the filter. Remove the glow plug and add after-burn oil to the cylinder heads to keep the pistons and other internal components lubricated between uses.
Remove and inspect the glow plug when the car is not in use. After clearing any built-up deposits that may foul the plug, install the plug when the car is ready for use. Ensure that the component is properly seated. A loose plug will prevent full combustion. After the vehicle has started, remove the glow plug heater. Failure to do so will cause the heater to burn out the glow plug.
The carburetor on a nitro engine can be adjusted for driving conditions. Owners can use a low, or lean, fuel/air mixture or a high, rich mix for brief periods, but operation on either extreme for extended periods will damage the engine.
Check and Recharge the Battery Pack
Check the power level in the car battery pack in the car at regular intervals as well as the batteries in the transmitter. Unresponsive servos are indicative of low battery power. If the car will be stored for more than a week, remove the batteries from the car and the controller to prevent corrosion. Charge the vehicle battery pack overnight so there is a full charge for racing the next day.
Check the Tires and Suspension
Check the tires for damage before operating the vehicle. The high torque from the engine can cause the tires to come loose. Ensure they are secure and properly balanced. Look for cuts, tears, gashes, and missing pieces. Re-glue the tires to the wheels or replace the tires as necessary. Check the shocks and suspension system after each use. Remove the shock absorbers and add the correct type and amount of shock oil required for the shocks to function properly.
Inspect and Clean the Body
Inspect the car and controller for broken, missing, and damaged parts as well as loose screws, nuts, and other fasteners. Re-glue parts that have broken off and patch holes and other damage. Use touch-up paint on the exterior. Ensure that spoilers and other body panels are securely fastened before each race.
