26th June 2015 – Globalstar Inc.’s gateway in Gaborone, Botswana is now live, enabling affordable simplex coverage over the African continent. This new gateway, in partnership with Broadband Botswana Internet (BBi), provides a full line of services – including Globalstar’s SPOT portfolio of personal tracking options. The network enables professional, corporate, and government users to monitor vital infrastructure, taking advantage of the capabilities of M2M and the Internet of Things.

With much of the continent bereft of decent terrestrial and/or cellular infrastructure, Globalstar’s satellite services enable the seamless tracking of people and assets via the industry’s only complete next generation orbital constellation. It means that oil and gas providers operating in the region – as well as mining, construction, and engineering companies – can now benefit from time and resource saving features from Globalstar’s M2M-based SmartOne product line. Remote workers on land or offshore can also keep head office, customers, family and friends abreast of their location with the company’s SPOT Gen3® product, which has a lifeline button in case of emergency.

Asset tracking with Globalstar

In addition to onsite connectivity benefits, the companies transporting valuable commodities will also be able to accurately track and monitor their fleets. At the core of SmartOne is a vibration sensor that alerts trucking owners to any motion, such as attempts of theft. The device accurately relays a vehicle’s location, as well as report engine runtime and monitor faults, both of which can make a difference to operational efficiencies.
